Spring A/C Prep Starts Now: 5 Simple To-Dos
Winter in San Diego is pretty mild—but summer is another story. The first real heat wave hits, everyone flips on the air conditioning at once… and that’s when we start seeing the “no cool” calls roll in.
The good news? A little bit of early spring A/C prep can help your system start the season strong, run more efficiently, and avoid those surprise breakdowns when you need it most.
Here are five simple to-dos you can tackle now, before the temperatures climb.
1. Swap Out That Tired Air Filter
If you only do one thing on this list, make it this.
Your air filter protects your A/C from dust and debris and keeps air moving freely through the system. When it’s dirty, your system has to work harder to pull air, which can lead to:
Higher energy bills
Weak airflow at the vents
Frozen coils and breakdowns
What to do:
Turn your system off.
Find the filter (usually at the return grille or inside the furnace/air handler).
Slide it out and inspect it. If it looks gray, dusty, or clogged—replace it.
Use the same size and match the recommended MERV rating for your system.
For most homes, changing the filter every 1–3 months is a good habit—more often if you have pets, allergies, or a lot of dust.
2. Clear the Area Around Your Outdoor Unit
Your outdoor condenser (the big box outside) needs room to breathe. When it’s crowded with leaves, branches, or stored items, it can’t get enough airflow, which hurts efficiency and cooling performance.
Quick checklist:
Gently remove leaves, twigs, and debris from the top and around the sides.
Trim back plants or shrubs so there’s at least 2–3 feet of clearance around the unit.
Don’t stack anything (bikes, boxes, patio stuff) against the unit.
Avoid spraying water directly into electrical panels or using high-pressure wash; a light rinse on the coil fins is fine if they’re dusty, but be gentle.
3. Check Your Vents and Returns Indoors
Before the cooling season kicks in, it’s a great time to make sure air can actually move the way it’s supposed to through your home.
Walk through the house and:
Make sure supply vents (where air blows out) aren’t blocked by furniture, rugs, or clutter.
Check return grills (the bigger vents that pull air in) to ensure they’re open and not covered or taped over.
Lightly vacuum dust from vent covers if they look dirty.
Closing too many vents in unused rooms can actually hurt your system by increasing pressure in the ductwork. It’s better to keep most vents open and let your system do what it was designed to do.
4. Do a Quick “Test Run” Before the First Heat Wave
Don’t wait until the first 90-degree day to find out your A/C has a problem.
Pick a mild day and:
Switch your thermostat to Cool.
Set the temperature a few degrees lower than the current room temperature.
Let the system run for 10–15 minutes.
Pay attention to a few things:
Is cool air coming from the vents?
Does the outdoor unit turn on and sound normal? (No loud grinding or screeching.)
Does the thermostat respond correctly when you adjust the temperature?
If something feels off—warm air, strange noises, the system short-cycling—it’s much easier to schedule service now than in the middle of a busy heat wave.
5. Schedule a Professional A/C Tune-Up
DIY prep is great, but there are things only a trained tech can safely check and adjust. That’s where a professional spring tune-up comes in.
During an A/C tune-up, a Patriot Air technician will typically:
Inspect and clean key components (coils, blower, electrical connections)
Check refrigerant pressures and temperatures
Test safety controls
Verify airflow and temperature split
Look for early signs of wear, leaks, or failing parts
Catching small issues in spring can help you avoid:
Breakdowns on the hottest days
Expensive emergency repairs
Higher-than-necessary summer energy bills
If your system is older, a yearly tune-up is especially important to keep it running as long and as efficiently as possible.
Bonus: Think About Comfort Upgrades
While you’re in “spring prep” mode, it’s also a good time to think about improvements that can make your home more comfortable all summer:
Smart thermostat to better control schedules and save energy
Zoning or ductwork adjustments for hot/cold spots
Indoor air quality upgrades (better filtration or air purification) if allergies or dust are an issue
System replacement options if your A/C is 12–15+ years old and struggling
You don’t have to decide everything now—but having the conversation before peak season gives you more time and more options.
